The microbes living on and within us (mostly within our GI tracts) comprise a complex and dynamic community that has different genomes from ours and is thus truly foreign. More than ninety-nine percent of the total DNA we use comes not from our own cells, but from bacterial genes living in our gut microbiome. These bugs profoundly influence the health of our brains and bodies. (See Chapter 16.)
